Where to start
If you are looking for government support, your family GP is the best place to start when seeking an ADHD assessment. Please see here for a list of GP surgeries located in Jersey.
Before your appointment, it can help to make a note of any patterns you’ve noticed things like difficulties with focus, impulsive moments, restlessness, losing items, or feeling overwhelmed at school, work or home.
During the appointment, try to describe these experiences as clearly as you can. If a referral isn’t mentioned and you feel one would be helpful, you can gently express that by saying something like: “I’d find it reassuring to be assessed by a specialist, if that’s possible.”

During and After Assessment
Assessments may include questionnaires, interviews, and behavioural evaluations designed to understand how ADHD affects your daily life. The process can involve both you and those close to you, helping the specialist build a full picture of your experiences across different settings. If you receive a diagnosis, your specialist will take time to explain what it means and discuss treatment options such as therapy, medication, and personalised coping strategies to help you manage symptoms and build confidence moving forward.
Preparing for diagnosis

For Adults
Before your assessment, take some time to reflect on how attention, focus or impulsivity have affected you at different stages of life — at school, work and home. Write a brief summary highlighting key patterns or difficulties, and gather feedback from people who know you well. Including supporting documents, such as old school reports or performance reviews, can also give the specialist a clearer understanding of your experience.

For Kids
If your child is being assessed, ask teachers or caregivers for written observations about their behaviour in school, during lessons and in social settings. Try to note any patterns of inattention, impulsivity or hyperactivity that occur at home too. Keeping a short diary over a few weeks can provide valuable examples to share with the specialist during the assessment.
